Buenos Aires 2026

We managed to return our rental vehicle by the time required and then took an uber to our hotel, one we had stayed at several times in the past. We spent the day repacking for our flight the following evening, and trhe following morning we visited the Costanera Sur reserve. We had visited this area the previous year with a birding guide, and it is very popular with those living in Buenos Aires. It is entirely artificial – being composed of fill material from construction projects in downtown. But it has been there long enough s(sine the 1980’s) and is managed well enough for nature restoration, that there is much natural wildlife and vegetation. Of course, there is plenty of non-native vegetation as well, that will sort itself out in the following decades.

The reserve, about 1.5 miles long, is bordered by the Rio de la Plata on one side (brackish water) and a long moat on the city side. There are only two entrances and the hours are controlled – from 8AM to 6 PM. The main park trails are heavily used by walkers, runners, and slow bikes on weekends, but the day we visited was a weekday so there were fewer people. A new boardwalk system has been built in the past several years and was partly closed for reconstruction from recent flooding. These boardwalks are closed to bikes and runners, and is for nature observation.
