San Marcos area

BACK TO ARGENTINA 2026

The San Marcos Sierras was not a destination we planned for. We looked at places that were not too far from Chilicito, and could not find suitable lodging in the towns were would be passing through. It turns out that San Marcos is a “hippie” destination among Argentineans, and was more crowded than we anticipated. However, we did identify a place 3 miles out of town on the road in and it advertised quiet ambience among nature. Or something like that. Google imagery also suggested it might be natural enough for insects…

In short, we were pleasantly surprised by the lodging cabins (actually three units were merged together, so privacy wasn’t 100%, but each place had a separate entrance and access and we found suitable places for lights. We ultimately decided to stay three nights, though we had to move to an upstairs unit for the last night due to the place being full on the weekend.

Besides the nightly insects, the grounds were excellent for birding, and for walking among mostly natural vegetation.
